The Scout Association offers fun and everyday adventure to 573,000 young people between the ages of 6 and 25 across the United Kingdom.
The Leaders became involved in running a County run event called “Norfolk Camp Together” where youngsters from special schools around Norfolk were invited to join Scouts of a similar age for a weekend of Scout & Guide based activities. May 2005 saw the opening of a Scout Troop at the Clare School in Norwich, when the Group was renamed the 46th Norwich Scout Group with 14 young people with special needs who attended Clare School joining us.
Since that time the Group has continued to develop, attending the Norfolk International Jamboree (NORJAM) in 2006, 2010 and 2014. Two of our Scouts were selected to attend the 21st World Scout Jamboree in August 2007 and another scout a place on the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. Leaders have been selected to attend every World Jamboree since 2007, supporting youngsters with disabilities, working with a unit, helping on the International Service Team or in the UK Contingent Management Team. We try to ensure everyone in our Group can try the outdoor or indoor activities you would expect Scouts to do!
On 28th April 2008 the Group was nominated and received a Civic Award for Voluntary Services from the City of Norwich. This was presented at a special ceremony by the Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich.
In June 2010 the leaders of the Group were nominated by parents – and awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of the services offered by the Group “enabling sick or disabled young people to experience Scouting or Guiding in a safe and secure environment”.
Every year the Group holds a summer camp as well as an occasional weekend away in London. For the past few years the Group has held their own “Camp Together” inviting all young people between the ages of 10 – 15 at Norfolk Special Schools to come and join them at the Eaton Vale Scout & Guide Activity Centre for a long weekend of camping and Scouting activities.
